Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am home-schooled. Am I still eligible for membership in the National Speech and Debate Honor Society?

A: Yes. Please fill out a contact form and put 'home-schooled applicant' in the first line. We will send you a specific application packet to fill out based on your personal circumstances.

Q: I compete for a school, but do not have a coach. How do I complete the application packet without a coach's affidavit?

A: Please fill out the contact form, and put 'self coached' in the first line. Make sure to include a phone number, we will follow up to figure out the best way to proceed for your specific circumstances.

Q: Do I have to fill out all the portions of the application packet? What if I don't know the dates of the tournaments I competed at?

A: Unfortunately, all parts of the application are necessary for consideration for membership into the National Speech and Debate Honor Society. Attempt to find those dates by looking at old ballots, or looking at registration emails, or even checking your Facebook posts.

Q: How long will it take before I learn whether or not my application has been accepted?

A: The average applicant's coach will get an acceptance packet or a declination email approximately 4-6 weeks after applying.

Q: Can I rush my turn-around time for acceptance?

A: Yes, if your Induction ceremony is closer than the 4-6 week time frame, we can rush your acceptance for an additional fee of $29. Add the total to your application fee, bringing the entire cost to $66.

Q: How do I get a refund of my application fee if I am not accepted?

A: Unfortunately, application fees are non-refundable. They are covering the cost of the services we use, and the costs of the review process.

Q: My school doesn't use a 4.0 GPA scale, am I still able to apply?

A: Yes, if your average is comparable on the scale to  minimum requirements for the honor roll you're attempting, you are welcome to apply and your application will not be discriminated against.

Q: What is included in the acceptance packet?

A: All accepted members receive graduation cords and lapel pin at no additional cost. Students may also opt into receiving an official certificate.

Q: Where on the application do I input the trophies I've won?

A: No where. The National Speech and Debate Honor Society recognizes individuals for their commitment to education, discourse, initiative, and determination. Not their commitment to winning.

Q: I don't want to put my credit card information onto the internet? Am I able to mail a check and a paper copy of my application into the organization?

A: Yes, we do accept paper copies, though we discourage it, as we like to be environmentally friendly. In order to mail a paper copy of your application, first contact us for the mailing address.
